SenseApp 2018

Welcome Message from the SenseApp Program Chairs

The 13th IEEE International Workshop on Practical I ues in Building Sensor Network Applications (SenseApp 2018) was held in Chicago, IL, in conjunction with the 43nd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN 2018). In its 13th anniversary edition the workshop attracted 6 submi ions with authors from 5 different countries. Each paper went through a rigorous peer review proce , with each submi ion receiving 4 reviews from members of the Technical Program Committee, composed of 18 domain experts from 11 countries. Based on the referee reports, 3 regular papers were accepted for presentation at the workshop. We believe that the accepted papers provide interesting results and insights on the use of wirele sensor networks in practical applications as well as valuable reports on experiences in deploying such systems. In addition to the technical papers, the workshop program included an exciting keynote addre by Charlie Catlett. We would like to thank all the people who worked hard to make this workshop a succe . First and foremost we would like to expre our gratitude to all the members of the Technical Program Committee for their diligent effort in providing high quality reviews in a timely manner. We would also like to thank the LCN 2018 Organizing Committee and the SenseApp 2018 General Chairs and Steering Committee for their help and support. Special thanks are due to James Pope, SenseApp Publicity chair, Hwee-Pink Tan, LCN Workshop Chair, Kemal Akkaya, LCN General Chair, as well as Fadi M. Al-Turjman and Frank Huebner, LCN Publications and Finance Chairs, for their help and guidance. Last but not least, we would like to thank the authors for choosing to submit their publications to IEEE SenseApp 2018. It was the pioneer workshop in practical aspects of wirele sensor networks and established itself quickly with the support of annually changing co-chairs: Shivakant Mishra, Utz Roedig, Nael Abu-Ghazaleh, Kay Roemer, and Andreas Terzis. From 2011 on, Salil Kanhere and Matthias Hollick co-organized the workshop together, in the last years jointly with dedicated program chairs. After some 13 years of running Senseapp, the time has come to say goodbye: the 13th edition of SenseApp will also be its last one. SenseApp, in retrospect, was wildly succe ful and exceeded the expectation of its founders and organizers. However, the growing maturity of wirele sensor networks and commercial internet of things deployments went hand in hand with changes in academic publishing that discourages submitting to workshop venues. Quality of submi ions and exchange between the â€oemakers" of the sensor network community were always the prime target of SenseApp and we are proud that we never had to compromise on these. Many thanks to the supporters and authors as well as keynote speakers who made SenseApp great. We thank everyone who made SenseApp the place to be if you were working in the area of practical wirele sensor networks. Senseapp would not have been po ible without its host conference IEEE LCN, hence, thousand thanks go to the amazing LCN community.
